En días futuros, el monte de la casa del Señor será elevado en la cima de los montes,
encumbrado sobre las montañas, y hacia él confluirán todas las naciones. Así habla el profeta Isaías en nuestra primera lectura, y si queremos entender correctamente esta profecía, primero debemos comprender a qué se refiere el profeta. El monte de la casa del Señor es, por supuesto, el monte Sión en Jerusalén, la montaña, o para ser más exactos, la colina sobre la que se construyó el Templo, donde misteriosamente moraba la presencia de Dios. Esta montaña, o mejor dicho, esta colina, es bastante modesta. Se pueden ver montañas mucho más altas en la distancia cuando se conduce por Cedar Bluff. Pero lo que el profeta quiere decir no es que esta montaña se elevará físicamente por encima de esas montañas —no va a surgir un nuevo Everest de Jerusalén—, sino que el monte Sión, la montaña de la presencia del Señor, será exaltado muy por encima de todas las demás montañas debido a la presencia del Señor en él, y será reconocido como tal por todas las naciones, que posteriormente acudirán en masa hacia él diciendo: «Vengan, subamos al monte del Señor, a la casa del Dios de Jacob, para que él nos instruya en sus caminos y podamos marchar por sus sendas».

In First Samuel chapter eight, the Israelites come to Samuel in his old age and demand that he appoint a king to rule over them, just as the nations around them are ruled by a king. This is not, to Samuel’s eyes, a good thing, and indeed God himself is displeased by this request. You are not the one they are rejecting, he assures Samuel, but rather they are rejecting me as their king, says the Lord. Nevertheless, after having warned the people of all the evils that will follow when a king is placed over them, Samuel, following God’s instruction, listens to the people’s plea, and anoints Saul of the tribe of Benjamin to rule over God’s chosen people.

En el capítulo ocho del primer libro de Samuel, los israelitas acuden a Samuel en su vejez y le exigen que nombre a un rey para que los gobierne, al igual que las naciones vecinas están gobernadas por un rey. As a priest, I spend a fair amount of time around people who are dying. Whether in a hospital or at home, it’s a common part of my duties to bring people the sacraments in such situations, to hear their confessions, to anoint them, and, if they are able, to give them viaticum, the Blessed Sacrament one last time. And often these encounters can be truly beautiful, as it’s a great privilege to be able to accompany a Christian soul as it prepares to leave this life and go to meet our Lord.

Como sacerdote, paso bastante tiempo con personas que están muriendo. Ya sea en un hospital o en casa, una parte habitual de mis funciones consiste en llevar los sacramentos a las personas en esas situaciones, escuchar sus confesiones, ungirlas y, si pueden, darles viaticum, el Santísimo Sacramento, por última vez. A menudo, estos encuentros pueden ser realmente hermosos, ya que es un gran privilegio poder acompañar a un alma cristiana mientras se prepara para dejar esta vida e ir al encuentro de nuestro Señor.

En nuestra primera lectura se nos relata una visión mística de su estado: una gran multitud que nadie podía contar, de todas las naciones, razas, pueblos y lenguas, de pie ante la presencia inefable de Dios en alabanza, adoración y veneración, junto con los ángeles. Los santos, de todos los tiempos y todos los lugares, unidos ante el trono de Dios.

For the Christian, there are few things that are so dangerous as spiritual pride, as is clearly displayed in this gospel. For consider this Pharisee and all the ways in which his pride blinds and misleads him. First, he prays not to God, but rather to himself, as our Lord says. This prayer, in other words, whereby he reassures himself that he is not like the rest of humanity, is not a prayer in any real sense, but is rather a mere talking to oneself – there is no true reference to God. Indeed, not only is this Pharisee merely talking to himself, but even the righteousness which he believes himself to possess he does not attribute to God’s grace, but rather to his own fasting and his own almsgiving, his own efforts. This Pharisee is thus praising himself for what he ultimately thinks to be his own accomplishment – there is no sense in his words of that posture of receptivity that we must always have towards the divine, no hint of his own status as a sinner who can do no good thing on his own, but who must rather depend on God in every moment for his salvation. In fact, you could even say that the Pharisee is making himself God, for what else is one doing if one prays to oneself and thinks oneself to be justified by one’s own efforts?

Perseverance in prayer. This is certainly a theme in these readings. Moses, with the help of Aaron and Hur holding up his arms, perseveres in prayer as Joshua battles Amalek. And then the widow of this somewhat strange parable perseveres in making her petition to this dishonest and arrogant judge. Certainly then, the lesson for us, that we likewise ought to be persevering in our prayer, is clear enough, for our Lord himself says: Will not God secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them?

Perseverancia en la oración. Este es sin duda el tema de estas lecturas. Moisés, con la ayuda de Aarón y Hur, que le sostienen los brazos, persevera en la oración mientras Josué lucha contra Amalec. Y luego, la viuda de esta parábola un tanto extraña persevera en su petición al juez deshonesto y arrogante. Sin duda, la lección que debemos aprender, que también nosotros debemos perseverar en nuestra oración, es bastante clara, pues nuestro Señor mismo dice: ¿Acaso Dios no hará justicia a sus elegidos, que claman a él día y noche?
